Le Pale di San Martino

Pointed needles, edges as sharp as knives, superb stone cathedrals, soaring towers whose tops are lost in the heavens: these are the Pale di San Martino, majestic and elegant coral mountains born approximately 300 million years ago. From the nineteenth century travellers to foreign mountaineers, from the author Dino Buzzati to the tourists of today, all have been fascinated by their austere beauty which culminates in the Plateau delle Pale: a lunar landscape of over fifty square kilometres, characterised by an incredible stone plateau suspended at over 2000 metres.
